Passing of Mitch Atkinson

Dear Charger Backers – It is with a sad heart that I must inform you of the passing of one of our members Joseph (Mitch) Atkinson, 82 SAN MARCOS/SAN DIEGO. Joseph “Mitch” Atkinson passed away in San Marcos on Saturday, February 5, 2011.

He was born on June 11, 1928 and lived his whole life in San Diego. Mitch was a graduate of Hoover High School in 1946 and served in the Army during the Korean War. One of his proudest accomplishments was marching twice in the Rose Bowl with Bonham Brothers Band. He worked for many years as office manager at Windowmaster in San Diego. His hobbies were crafts, travel. S.D. Charger events, and golf. Recently, he and his golf team won first place in Executive tourneys at Sycuan and Reidy Creek. He was an accomplished calligrapher. For many years, he also crafted red velveteen Christmas trees with souvenirs for dozens of friends. He traveled to Alaska, Panama Canal, and regular visits to Montana.

Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Virginia Atkinson; two brothers, George and Gordon; a sister, Lorraine; and a son, James Edward Atkinson. He is survived by a daughter, Suzie Jacobsmeier; two grandsons; a brother, Howard of San Diego; and his companion of 20 years, Ellie Selstad of San Marcos.

Mitch was a season ticket holder of the San Diego Chargers for decades and belonged to the San Diego Chargers Backers, Elks Club, and the American Legion, VFW Post 1774. A celebration of the life of Mitch Atkinson will be held in the near future.
